Helmet Wise: Protecting Cambodia's Future

Promoting helmet use among school children in South-East Asia

From one-handed fridge deliveries to a herd of schoolkids astride a rickety ride, motorbikes are the pulsing heartbeat of Cambodia, often the only way to find a way through choked roads and tiny, crowded backstreets. With 5.2 million bikes on the road, the only thing lacking is the protective gear to go with them.

What is Helmet Wise?

Helmet Wise is an innovative community-driven organisation dedicated to creating a culture of road safety in Cambodia. Our aim is to encourage generational change by targeting school-age children and encouraging awareness of the need for a helmet when you ride a bike. Via engaging awareness campaigns, interactive education initiatives, and a rewards system, we aim to substantially raise helmet compliance and teach the next generation the importance of protection on the roads.

Making Cambodia’s roads safer, one helmet at a time.

Get Involved

In order to pioneer a movement to ensure every ride is a safe ride we are partnering with sponsors and philanthropists in this vital mission to help protect the lives of Cambodia’s school-age riders. It’s simple. We source and fund the helmets, and then deploy them to the communities that reach out, teaching the kids that every time you wear a helmet, you get rewarded! In this way, community-driven change can be fostered.

Who We Are

It’s our mission to make Cambodia’s roads safer by promoting the use of helmets among motorcycle riders, with a special focus on children of school age. In the knowledge that the majority of Cambodians use motorbikes to move around, and that road injuries are the country’s sixth leading cause of death, we believe Helmet Wise can make a significant difference to the lives of millions of Cambodians.

Pilot Awareness Campaign

Our pilot awareness campaign will be rolled out in Cambodia’s second largest city, Siem Reap, featuring a comprehensive educational program that targets young riders, community outreach initiatives to engage parents, communities and elders, and an incentivisation scheme to encourage involvement.

Innovative Sticker Reward System

Helmet Wise has devised an innovative and incentivised sticker reward system that encourages kids to wear helmets by offering rewards such as vouchers, merch and public recognition. It’s a data-driven approach that aims to encourage and cement long-term behavioural change.

Understanding the Market

Our target market is expansive – every motorbike rider in Cambodia! An initial schools pilot program in Siem Reap will deliver profile data that can then be scaled to a nationwide campaign. With increasing awareness of road safety issues in Asia, and a clear desire to see change in this area, we believe there is a clearly defined market for the program.

Sustainable Business Model

HelmetWise is an organisation funded via grants, donations, and in partnership with like organisations. We prioritise social impact over revenue, and allocate funding income to community outreach, educational programs, rewards systems and operational expenses.

Our Approach

Our approach centres on incentivising the use of helmets in school-age children – making it easy and fun to put a lid on before your jump on the bike. Our Siem Reap pilot program involves tracking helmet use via stickers the kids can put on their helmets, and community reporting, providing valuable data to roll-out the program on a national level. By tapping into the current trend towards road safety, we believe an incentivised scheme will appeal widely to our target audience.

Looking Ahead

The HelmetWise model is both adaptable and scalable and long term we envisage being able to roll out an incentivised scheme throughout Cambodia. Agile and easily accessible, we believe this model can be tailored to fit different almost any cultural context, and our vision includes expansion into the rest of Asia – and beyond.
